BEATRIZ CONTRERAS studied law at Robson Hall at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg graduating with her LL.B. in 2002. After articling with a major Winnipeg-based law firm and being called to the Manitoba bar in 2003, Beatriz relocated to Toronto to begin her law practice. In 2006, Beatriz co-founded Contreras McLennan – Barristers & Solicitors operating in Toronto’s financial district until 2011.  Following her relocation to British Columbia, Beatriz worked at a downtown Victoria law firm prior to opening Contreras McLennan Law Corporation in 2012.

Beatriz has advocated on behalf of her clients at the Provincial Court of British Columbia, the Supreme Court of British of Columbia, the Federal Court of Canada, the Ontario Court of Justice, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Court of Appeal for Ontario as well as before various boards and tribunals including the Immigration and Refugee Board.

During her undergraduate studies at the University of Manitoba, Beatriz won many prestigious awards and scholarships including the Faculty of Arts General Degree Gold Medal in 1998, Outstanding Student Award and numerous University of Manitoba Student scholarships and bursaries.

Beatriz obtained her Master of Laws degree (LL.M.) at York University in Toronto in 2010 specializing in family law.

Beatriz was called to the Ontario Bar in 2003 and to the British Columbia Bar in 2011. Since 2003, she has practiced primarily in the areas of Family Law and Immigration Law.  Beatriz is a fully trained collaborative law lawyer and a member of the Collaborative Family Separation Professionals group in Victoria.  In addition, she is accredited as a mediator by the Law Society of British Columbia and has broad-based experience with successfully mediating disputes.

Originally from El Salvador, she is fully bilingual in both English and Spanish and is well on her way to becoming fluent in French.

During the course of her practice, Beatriz has successfully represented clients from numerous cultural backgrounds and has worked closely servicing the needs of the Latin American community.

An engaging speaker, for the last several years, Beatriz has presented before numerous groups on the topic of the systemic barriers faced by racialized professionals everyday in Canada. Beatriz is a member of the Law Society of British Columbia’s Equity and Diversity committee.
